🥎 Softball Equipment & Gear
A simple guide to the equipment you may need to play softball with the San Francisco Gay Softball League.
Getting Ready to Play
Whether you're stepping onto the field for the first time or replacing some well-loved gear, having the right equipment can make your softball experience safer and more enjoyable.
🌈 New to Softball?
You don't need to buy everything at once. A good softball glove and comfortable athletic footwear are great places to start. Many teams have bats and other equipment that players can share. Before purchasing expensive gear, check with your team manager to see what your team already has available.
Softball Gloves
Your glove will probably be the most important piece of personal equipment you purchase.
- Choose a glove designed for softball or baseball.
- Make sure the glove feels comfortable and secure on your hand.
- Outfielders often prefer larger gloves for additional reach.
- Infielders may prefer a slightly smaller glove for quicker transfers.
- New gloves usually need some time to break in.
Softball Bats
Teams commonly share bats, so new players may not need to purchase one immediately.
- Use only bats permitted under current league rules.
- Bat length and weight should feel comfortable for your swing.
- Do not assume every commercially available softball bat is legal for league play.
- Check with your manager before purchasing an expensive bat.
Cleats & Footwear
Proper footwear can provide additional traction when running, fielding, and changing direction.
- Softball or baseball molded cleats are commonly used.
- Turf shoes can also be comfortable depending on field conditions.
- Choose footwear that fits securely and provides good ankle support.
- Check league rules for any restrictions on cleat types.
Batting Helmets
Helmets help protect players while batting and running the bases.
- Use a helmet that fits securely and comfortably.
- Inspect helmets regularly for cracks or damage.
- Do not use a helmet that has been significantly damaged.
- Follow all current SFGSL safety and equipment requirements.
🛡️ Protective Equipment
Some players choose additional protection depending on their position and comfort level.
- Protective fielding masks
- Shin or leg guards
- Sliding shorts or protective padding
- Athletic supporters or protective cups
- Sports sunglasses or protective eyewear
🥎 Softballs
Official game balls are typically managed through the league or teams, so individual players generally do not need to purchase game balls.
- Teams may keep additional softballs for warmups and practices.
- Practice balls are useful for throwing, fielding, and batting drills.
- Check with your manager before purchasing league-specific balls.
What to Bring on Game Day
It helps to keep a dedicated softball bag packed and ready throughout the season.
- 🧤 Softball glove
- 👟 Cleats or athletic shoes
- 💧 Plenty of water
- 🧴 Sunscreen
- 🧢 Hat or visor
- 🕶️ Sunglasses
- 👕 Team uniform or jersey
- 🧦 Extra socks
- 🩹 Any personal first-aid or athletic supplies you regularly use
Need Equipment?
SFGSL believes everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy softball. Players who are new to the sport or who need assistance obtaining equipment are encouraged to speak with their team manager.
Teams and league members may also have gently used gloves, bats, bags, cleats, or other equipment available to lend or donate.
SFGSL Equipment Rules
The following equipment requirements apply to SFGSL league play. Players and managers are responsible for making sure equipment and uniforms meet league standards.
🥽 A. Faceguards
Each team is highly encouraged to wear a catcher/pitcher faceguard, but it is not mandatory.
👕 B. Uniforms
Each player must have a shirt of like color with a six-inch (6”) number shown on the back of their shirt.
- No metal cleats are allowed.
- Bandanas are acceptable, but not to be worn around the neck.
- Hats may be worn forwards or backwards.
- A player must have a jersey no later than the fourth week of scheduled games following the start of the season.
- Players without a proper jersey are not permitted to participate in any game.
🥎 C. Game Balls
The home team is responsible for providing one (1) new game ball. These are distributed to managers in a league meeting prior to Opening Day.
Game balls to be used are determined based on the official softballs approved for each division:
- Women’s+: ASANA 11” .52COR/300 Comp
- Open: iPride Softball 12” .52COR/300 Comp
🏏 D. Bats
The USA Softball Non-Approved Bat List will be enforced. All bats used must be legal for USA Softball play.
Use of a Non-Approved (or altered) bat will result in the batter being called out and ejected.

Each team must provide their own first aid supplies.
